Managing the horse on box rest

Posted on May 31st, 2011

Most horses as some point or another will have a period of box rest normally as a result of injury or disease. For the horse confinement can be a very stressful experience and in busy yard with other horses coming in and out many get very anxious or depressed.  Correct management at this time is vital for health and long term recovery.

Creating a comfortable, healthy and stimulating environment for your horse is essential during periods of box rest.  Concrete floors are not a comfortable option for horses as they can be slippery, unforgiving and conduct the cold.  A good deep bed is the best option for support, comfort and warmth.  Banks can be added but care should be taken that they do not take up too much room. Miscanthus is a great option for horses on box rest as it packs in for support and comfort, is highly absorbable, dust extracted, locks in odour, unpalatable and still remains light and airy to work with.  Thanks to its high absorbency Miscanthus is also ideal over rubber matting.

Dust can cause problems with the respiratory system, which can lead to long term conditions such as COPD. Dust in the stable comes from bedding and feed, reducing it requires a combination of the right brand and good management;

Choose a bedding that is dust extracted such as Easy Pack Miscanthus

Ensure proper ventilation

Ensure feed is mold free and add water to reduce dust

Change from hay to haylage such as Easy Pack Timothy Haylage

Keeping the horse entertained whilst on box rest can reduce stress and the development of behavioural problems.  There are many toys available on the market from licks to feed balls all great for entertaining the horse during the day particularly at times where other horses are going in and out.

Grazing, the act of chewing, is also very important for a horse as the motion of chewing acts as a naturally relaxant. Choosing a low protein haylage such as Easy Packs Timothy or Easy Pack Meadow will provide a great source of fibre increasing the horses chew time. Your horse will love the sweet freshness of Easy Pack Haylage and by spreading his daily ration into small portions throughout the day and using a haylage net he will be happy and occupied for longer.  Easy Pack Haylage is packed in a way that optimises nutritional content providing essential vitamins and minerals to your horse for good health and the high water content not only reduces dust but also aids digestion and hydration, idea for any horse but especially those on box rest.
